Art Philosophy

Print&Play to facilitate a Socratic class discussion

During the Art Appreciation course (taught by Ilse Van den Bogaert), we analysed the philosophical starting questions from Rasa, a non-profit organisation that offers high-quality art education to children and young people in South Africa. Additionally, we learned how to facilitate a philosophical classroom discussion using the Socratic method. This approach to philosophizing involves asking questions to collectively seek clarity, understanding, or truth. As a teacher, you guide your students in an investigative manner without providing the answers yourself. You ask them questions like, “What exactly do you mean by…?”, “Why do you think that?”, “Does that always apply, or are there exceptions?”

For this assignment, I created an easy-to-use Print&Play resource to complement the Escape Game about René Magritte. This Print&Play can be easily printed and applied in your own classroom. The document includes discussion cards and follow-up questions, so you can get started right away!
